SUSTAINABILITY

Sephaku Cement strives to create sustainable environmental management practices, through a proactive approach to addressing the challenges and opportunities of climate change.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

At Sephaku Cement we are committed to building world-class cement and ash production infrastructure in the southern African region and, as such, have a strong focus on sustainability and community development.
Development of the communities in which we operate is at the heart of our brand.

We are actively involved in community development programmes that are designed to uplift as many individuals as possible in the communities surrounding our operations. Consistent commitment and on-point work from Sephaku Cement, through which to establish rapport and trust-based relationships with the communities of Verdwaal I, Verdwaal II, Itsoseng and Sprinbokpan, began in 2007.

The realisation of our corporate social initiatives has contributed to Sephaku Cement being certified as a Level One contributor under the QSE scorecard principles. Our focus lies on education, local procurement and small business development through our CSI programmes.

For example, since 2010 we supplied educational DVDs to schools located in the Itsoseng area to assist with revision in preparation for the Grade 12 matric exams. We have also provided funding for extra Saturday and Holiday Classes for the Grade 12 learners at Tswelelopele High School (Itsoseng).

We strive to create jobs within our scope of influence and have structured programmes for training and development of local artisans, providing skills transfer for local workers and indirectly building local and economic development.

GEARED FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCIES

Sephaku Cement’s plants run on the latest cement production technology equipment and as a result, do not emit more than 30mg per normal cubic metre.

We aim to be the most carbon-efficient cement producer in southern Africa, with our plants designed to limit CO2 emissions to at least 15% lower than the industry standard..

Our operations incorporate modern advances such as vertical roller mills for raw mix, coal and cement grinding; with variable frequency drives that maximise product extension.

Consequently, electrical energy consumption per ton of cement is an impressive 20% lower than the industry norm.
